Overview

The capital of the grim, horned Broths—a city that, as the southerners aptly (and rather crudely) put it, “crawled onto the surface backside-first.” The Knivit Mountainsbirthed this place, nourished it with the fruits of their ores, and taught its inhabitants to fight against the horrors lurking in the deep. Yet, the ambition of this race has always demanded more than mere life in the dark.

The city is divided into two worlds:

  • The Under-Mountain: The greater part of the capital is encased within the rocks, at the very heart of the richest deposits.
  • The Upper Bastion: The smaller part, emerging into the light, is girt with fortifications wrought by the greatest engineers of the Kingdom of Tilhengor.

It was here, in Tilhen, that the foundation of what we now call “Guilds” was laid. The Broths were the first to grant craft unions a legal status, engraving their rights in stone and parchment. Back then, it seemed a wise step for economic prosperity; today, the Crown is choking on its own decrees. Rights granted centuries ago have transformed into monopolies with staggering capital, now dictating their will to the monarch.

Radiance and Rot

Tilhen is the cradle of organized labor that has become its own prison. The wealth circulating in the hands of guildmasters can buy not only the loyalty of the guards but entire levels of the city.

In the year 3799, matters are dire. The opposition—supporters of House Wittah—has infiltrated the very heart of the capital, inciting guilds to strike and sabotage. The city is seething: factions form on the lower cave levels, and those who voice their rights too loudly are exiled by the Crown even deeper, into the dark, abandoned mine shafts.

How much longer will the reign of House of Tilhens endure? Only their God knows. But Broths are naturally slow and conservative. Yaros I Tilhenski looks melancholically upon the chaos from his chambers, thinking that “it will all settle itself.” A dangerous delusion: when the stones begin to crumble beneath one’s feet, sitting still is the worst possible strategy.
