Overview
’’These beings stir sincere sympathy in me, though the memory of a single blank page torn from this very chronicle still makes me sigh. I was certain that the old Broth, barely breathing over an empty plate, would not swallow a single morsel. Yet he not only ate his portion but finished my meat as well, leaving me without a silver coin and with a hole in the binding. Never argue with a Broth about food—their stomachs, it seems, are built from the same blueprints as their endless mines.’’
The Broth are a race of massive, sturdy mountaineers whose essence is inextricably linked to the depths of the earth. Hailing from the rugged peaks of Knivit, they have established themselves as the master engineers and architects of our continent. By nature, they are calm and friendly; however, their deep-seated conservatism has led to a waning of their political influence over the centuries. They are the creators of the world’s most formidable fortifications and complex artifacts, driven by a restless desire to experiment—a trait that often leads to both brilliant breakthroughs and unforeseen catastrophes.
B…Analysis: Logistical FamineTheir primary strength is also their primary vulnerability. A Broth’s metabolism requires a staggering amount of sustenance. In a protracted campaign, their army becomes a burden to any supply train. Cut off the meat supply lines, and this “wall of muscle” will collapse under its own weight. A hungry Broth loses the will for engineering calculation faster than a human loses hope.
Physiology & Psychology
A Broth is a literal wall of muscle, typically standing over two meters tall. Their foreheads are marked by distinct bone growths; in some, these develop into modest horns, though they rarely exceed seven centimeters. Psychologically, they are patient and methodical, possessing a perspective on time that matches their two-hundred-year lifespan.
However, this physical power is fueled by a staggering appetite. As I learned during my ill-fated wager, a Broth can consume vast quantities of meat with no apparent effort. What we call a “full stomach” is but a breadcrumb fallen into the bottom of an abyss for them.
Culture & Society
Maturity among the Broth is measured slowly. Those aged barely twenty are called “Adult Youths”—mere fledglings, for true adulthood is recognized only at forty-two.
Their culture is shaped by bitter necessity. “The Ridding of Mouths” is a grim tradition where families send their children to the mines or distant garrisons early, lest those remaining starve. This has spawned a mobile working class: a Broth is loyal to his lord but not tied to the soil. He will travel hundreds of leagues for an engineering commission. But beware: their curiosity is a dangerous gift. A Broth engineer’s “unauthorized field test” can as easily strengthen a fortress wall as bring it down upon your head.
Social Fracture
The “Ridding of Mouths” tradition is a prime ground for recruitment. These “excess children,” severed from their ancestral homes, are easily bought with the promise of stable rations and gold. They make the finest siege masters for our Empire if one properly exploits their sense of “uselessness” to their own kin.
Origin
The history of the Broth began deep within the peaks of Knivit. Delving into the stone, they encountered blue Mazurite. This discovery led to centuries of bloody wars against “The Spawns”—beasts altered by the stone’s influence. Only after purging their subterranean domains did they emerge for the “unification of tribes.” Their Kingdom grew from dark foundations to seize lands under the sun. And though the capital remains anchored in the mountain abyss to this day, their banners fly far beyond the gates of Knivit.
